Note: It is strongly suggested that you  print off  a complete section for

reading through at a later date than trying to read the content of this

website directly off the computer  screen.

These pages are given to highlight further issues of building Christian community

around the world. Jesus Christ needs to be at the centre of all efforts to building

that community. Then there needs to be a wholistic emphasis on the inner person

(our spirit), middle person (our soul of mind, will and emotions) and our outer

persons (our physical body), as being necessary for building effective community.

Evolution : Still a Theory in Crisis, by Michael Denton

Publisher Descriptions

More than thirty years after his landmark book Evolution: A Theory in Crisis (1985), biologist Michael Denton

revisits his earlier thesis about the inability of Darwinian evolution to explain the history of life. He argues that

there remains “an irresistible consilience of evidence for rejecting Darwinian cumulative selection as the major

driving force of evolution.” From the origin of life to the origin of human language, the great divisions in the

natural order are still as profound as ever, and they are still unsupported by the series of adaptive transitional

forms predicted by Darwin. In addition, Denton makes a provocative new argument about the pervasiveness of

nonadaptive order throughout biology, order that cannot be explained by the Darwinian mechanism.

Heavenly Man, The by Hattaway Paul, Brother Yun.
Publisher Descriptions

The true story of how God took a young, half-starved  boy froma poor village in Henan Province,

China, and  used him to preachthe gospel despite intense persecution.

The Heavenly Man is the intensely dramatic story of how God took a young, half-starved boy from

a poor village in Henan Province and used him mightily to preach the gospel despite horrific

opposition. Brother Yun is one of China’s house church leaders, a man who despite his relative youth has suffered

prolonged torture and imprisonment for his faith. His account challenges any complacency about the

situation in China, where  international economic investment ignores the   brutal fact that religious

persecution is still a daily reality for millions.Instead of focusing on the many miracles or experiences

of suffering, however, Yun prefers to emphasize the  character and beauty of Jesus. This astonishing

book will

form a watershed in  your spiritual life.

God’s Politics
Wallis Jim (Author of the New York Times bestselling God’s Politics)
Publisher Descriptions

Since when did believing in God and having moral values make you  pro-war,pro-rich, and

pro-Republican? And since when did promoting  and pursuinga progressive social agenda with a

concern for economic  security, health care, and educational opportunity mean you had to put  faith in

God aside?

While the Right in America has hijacked the language of faith to prop up its  political agenda – an

agenda not all people of faith support – the Left hasn’t  done much better, largely ignoring faith and

continually separating moral discourse and personal ethics from public policy. While the Right argues that

God’s way is their way, the Left pursues an unrealistic separation of religious values from morally

grounded political leadership. The consequence is a false choice between ideological religion and

soulless politics. The effect of this dilemma was made clear in the 2004 presidential  election. The

Democrats’ miscalculations have left them despairing and searching for a way forward. It has become clear that someone mustchallenge the Republicans’ claim that they speak for God, or that theyhold a monopoly on moral values in the nation’s public life.

Wallis argues  that America’s separation of church and state does not requireBanishing  moral and

religious values from the public square. In fact, the verySurvival of America’s social fabric depends

on such values and vision to shape.

Our politics – a dependence the nation’s founders recognized.
God’s Politics offers a clarion call to make both our religious communities

and our government more accountable to key values of the propheticreligious tradition – that is,

them pro-justice, pro-peace, pro-environment,pro-equality, pro-consistent ethic of life (beyond single

issue voting), and pro-family (without making scapegoats of single mothers  or gays and lesbians).
Our biblical faith and religious traditions simply do not allow us as a nation  tocontinue to ignore the

poor and marginalized,  deny racial justice, tolerate  the ravages of war, or turn away from the human

rights of those made in the  image of God.

These are the values of love and justice, reconciliation, and  community that Jesus taught and that

are at the core of what many of us believe,  Christian or not. In the tradition  of prophets such as

Martin Luther King Jr.,  Dorothy Day, and Desmond Tutu,  Wallis inspires us to hold our political

leaders  and policies accountable by integrating our deepest moral convictions into our  nation’s

public life.

Velvet Elvis … Repainting the Christian Faith Rob Bell.
Publisher Descriptions

“Somewhere in my basement sits a Velvet Elvis – a painting of the   King himself,air-brushed onto

black velvet in a wooden frame.  What if the painter of my VelvetElvis announced there was no more   need to paint, that he had painted the ultimate painting? We would think  he had lost his mind because of our instinctive  understanding that art is  never done – it’s the endless process of learning, exploring, shaping and forming. And it’s no

different with faith. The Christian faith will never be complete. We willalways be exploring and discovering what it means to live in harmony with   God and each other. If we don’t, our faith may end up in the basement.  This

book is about the endless need to keep painting . . . Rob Bell.”– Publisher.

Irresistible Revolution, The
Claiborne Shane
Publisher Descriptions

Living as an Ordinary Radical, using unconventional examples from  his own life, Shane Claiborne

stirs up questions about the church and  the world, and challenges readers to truly live out their

Christian faith. Many of us find ourselves caught somewhere between unbelieving activists  and

inactive believers. We can write a cheque to feed starving children or  holdsigns in the streets and

feel like we’ve made a difference without ever  encountering the faces of the suffering masses.

In this book, Shane Claiborne describes an authentic faith rooted in belief, action, and love, inviting

us into   a movement of the Spirit that begins inside each of us and extends into a  broken world.

Shane’s faith led him:

        • to dress the wounds of lepers with Mother Teresa
        • visit families in Iraq amidst bombings
        • dump $10,000 in coins and bills on Wall Street to redistribute

Shane lives out this revolution each day in his local neighbourhood, an impoverished community

in North Philadelphia, by living among the homeless, helping local kids with homework, and

“practicing resurrection” in the  forgotten places of our world. Shane’s message will comfort the

disturbed,  and disturb the comfortable but will also invite us into an irresistible  revolution. His is

a vision for ordinary radicals ready to change the world  with little acts of love.

SIMPLY CHRISTIAN is essential reading for anyone who wants to consider the real fundamentals of

Christianity or isintrigued by its claims about the place of justice, beauty and love in our daily lives.Written in a live

ly and accessible style, though rooted in solid scholarship, this book describes the excitingrelevance of the Bible

and the Christian story for the contemporary world. It is laid out helpfully in three sections. The first opens with the frustrated longings of humanity for justice, spirituality, relationships and beauty: why are things like this, do they have to be so and can

life be lived differently?Tom Wright then sets out the central Christian belief about God and his creation, and

explores the biblical analysisof what’s wrong with the world. He explains God’s plan for its renewal, and the central

importance of Jesus. In the final section, he explores what it means to follow Jesus, to be energized by the Holy

Spirit and to advanceGod’s plan for our world.“Brilliant Bishop Wright is one of God’s best gifts to our decaying

Western church, and would-be learners andteachers of the faith will gain hugely from these fascinating pages.” –

No God But One: Allah Or Jesus? by Nabeel Qureshi:

Both Islam and Christianity teach that there is only one God, and so many people see them as similar and

overlapping. Bestselling author Nabeel Qureshi takes readers on a compelling journey that compares the two

faiths in detail, revealing their radically different natures.

On account of the superficial points of agreement between Islam and Christianity, many don’t see how

tremendously deep the divides between them really are, and fewer still have considered the evidence for each

faith. How is Jihad different from the Crusades? Can we know the life of Jesus as well as the life of Muhammad?

What reason is there to believe in one faith over the other, and what difference can the Gospel really make?

In No God But One, New York Times bestselling author Nabeel Qureshi takes readers on a global, historical,

yet deeply personal journey to the heart of the world’s two largest religions. He explores the claims that each faith makes upon believers’ intellects and lives, critically examining the evidence in support of their distinctive beliefs. Fleshed out

with stories from the annals of both religions, No God But One unveils the fundamental, enduring conflict between Islam and Christianity-directly addressing controversial topics like Jihad, the Crusades, Sharia, the Trinity, and more. Readers

of Qureshi’s first book, Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus, will appreciate his careful and respectful comparison of Islam

and Christianity. Both religions teach that there is No God But One, but who deserves to be worshiped, Allah or

Books on the New Spirituality Movement:

There are two religious spiritualities vying for the modern mind:1. A Spirituality from Jesus Christ ….

there is a great need to  equip the Church to answer, in the power of the gospel, the questions

emerging in a culture dominated by planetary paganism, for the sake of her evangelism and her

intentional Christian living. There is a further need:

  • To train a new generation of scholars and leaders to understand and inform
  • the Church  of the challenge of global paganism.
  • To understand the richness of the Christian gospel and the Bible’s worldview

in light  of the  post-modern pagan option.

  • To instruct members of Christ’s Church around the world about the

implicationsof living in and witnessing to a pagan world.

  • To give an understanding of the counter-cultural character of the Christian

Worldview to the  next generation of Christians, born into a paganized culture that claims to be

just and normative,  and dismisses Christianity as mere bigoted“traditionalism,” by giving Christian

youth an understanding  of the timeless character of the Christian/pagan antithesis. The New

Spirituality: This spirituality is quite different to the Spirituality from Jesus Christ as described  in

the page Spirituality from Jesus Christ …. where they are coming from.  Each is vying for the

modern mind.
