English in origin, the cottage garden depends on grace and charm rather than grandeur and formal structure. Homely and functional gardens connected to working-class cottages go back several centuries, but their reinvention in stylised versions grew in 1870s England, in reaction to the more structured and rigorously maintained English estate gardens that used formal designs and mass plantings of brilliant greenhouse annuals.<\/p>\n<p>The earliest cottage gardens were more practical than their modern descendants\u00a0 with an emphasis on vegetables and herbs, along with some fruit trees, perhaps a beehive, and even livestock. Flowers were used to fill any spaces in between. Over time, flowers became more dominant. The traditional cottage garden was usually enclosed, perhaps with a rose-bowered gateway. Flowers common to early cottage gardens included traditional florist&#8217;s flowers, such as <a title=\"Primula vulgaris\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Primula_vulgaris\">primroses<\/a> and <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Violet (plant)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Violet_%28plant%29\">violets<\/a>, along with flowers chosen for household use, such as <a title=\"Calendula\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Calendula\">calendula<\/a> and various <a title=\"Herb\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Herb\">herbs<\/a>. Others were the old-fashioned <a title=\"Rose\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rose\">roses<\/a> that bloomed once a year with rich scents, simple flowers like <a title=\"Bellis perennis\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bellis_perennis\">daisies<\/a>, and flowering herbs. Over time, even large estate gardens had sections they called &#8220;cottage gardens&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Modern-day cottage gardens include countless regional and personal variations of the more traditional English cottage garden, and embrace plant materials, such as ornamental grasses or <a title=\"Native plant\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Native_plant\">native plants<\/a>, that were never seen in the rural gardens of cottagers. Traditional roses, with their full fragrance and lush foliage, continue to be a cottage garden mainstay\u00a0 along with modern disease-resistant varieties that keep the traditional attributes. Informal climbing plants, whether traditional or modern hybrids, are also a common cottage garden plant. We have<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">only fully put this in July 2015. Before that we were dependent on a weekly<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">supply of sullage water. Since September\u00a0 2014\u00a0 we have put down a bore<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">to 36 metres and struck abundant water. With a\u00a0 branching irrigation pipe,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">bore water can now\u00a0 be brought to taps on the topside and bottom\u00a0 side<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">of our house.\u00a0 Sprinkling can be left on different areas for several hours at<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">a time for minimal cost. Having\u00a0abundant\u00a0 water for our garden, has greatly<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">changed how we do gardening.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a Cottage Gardens:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">For months on end, there were numerous storm lilies planted amongst<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">the low garden plants. They were whorled grey-green straplike 300 mm<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">long-limped leaves. It had been many months between heavy rain. A big summer<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">storm came and in a week the whorled grey-green straplike leaves suddenly<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">became very erect green straplike leaves. A central flower stalk emerged<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">with a bulbous flower head. In several more weeks the bulbous flower heads<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">burst open into the pink trumpet-like flowers shown below. In another<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">couple of weeks, the flower heads formed into rounded seed pods.
